Chembe Village (aka Cape Maclear) is the biggest tourist destination in the whole of Malawi. Located on the beautiful shores of Cape Maclear, the village is home to over 10,000 people of which 1866 attend primary school. With 15 teachers at the primary school and just a little help from the government, all of these 1866 children attend school each day. Although the moral is high and there are smiles all over - the funding which the government supplies is not enough to accommodate all the needs in the school. Uniforms are required in order to attend school, and at the moment more than 3 children share 1 (80 page) notebook per year. Our goal is to increase the amount of supplies, assist orphans and others with uniforms, provide shoes for everyone, further learning for teachers and structural support to make the school a safe place and good learning environment.
Our mission is a possible one... the children have the drive to learn and you can help to provide the means to make it possible. We believe that education is the key to ending poverty and raising HIV/AIDS awareness. Each day the children come to school because they are eager to learn... see our support page on 'how to help' details... and we look forward to seeing you at Chembe Primary School someday! Zikomo. (Thank oyu)
The project is inspired by Likoma Island's "Island Child" which was established years ago and proven to be a success. Although our projects are different as demands of each village are different - we have outlined our program based on their success. Thank you to Andrew, Suzie and the whole Kaya Mawa crew for your inspiration. The founders of Chembe Child, Dominique Antonie and Kelly Ritter, are encouraging tourists, lodges, family, friends and all those who are able, to support what you can to this project.
We encourage you to visit the school at any time during your visit, Kelly, Dominique or the headmaster, Mr. Kumate are happy to give you a tour and introduce you to the kids. Unfortunately, we cannot all also get where we want to be so if you're unable to visit us physically... please visit our news page and gallery to keep up to date on the latest progress and download our monthly newsletters. This website is designed to keep you up to date on our progress... each month newsletters will be posted online, along with photos and videos for you to follow. We encourage you to visit the school either physically or via the internet... "You are Most Welcome!"
